Alocasia Plumbea ‘Flying Squid’ 🦑 – Unusual Collector Alocasia

Alocasia plumbea ‘Flying Squid’ is an exceptionally unusual tropical aroid grown for its narrow, twisted foliage and long, curling petioles that give the plant its unmistakable squid-like appearance. Far removed from the broad leaves normally associated with Alocasias, this quirky collector form develops an architectural, almost sculptural silhouette that makes it a genuine conversation piece.

Why You’ll Love It ✔️

✔️ Appearance – Narrow, contorted foliage and curling stems create the distinctive tentacle-like look that inspired the ‘Flying Squid’ name.

✔️ Growing Appeal – An upright tropical Alocasia that stays visually light and sculptural, making it easy to display among broader-leaved plants.

✔️ Point of Difference – Few Alocasias look anything like it; the dramatically reduced, twisted foliage gives ‘Flying Squid’ one of the most recognisable forms in the genus.

Care Tips

🌞 Light: Bright indirect light is ideal. Gentle morning sun can be beneficial, but protect from harsh direct afternoon sun.

💧 Water: Water when the upper portion of the potting mix begins to dry. Keep lightly moist during active growth while avoiding constantly saturated conditions.

💦 Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity. A humidifier can be beneficial in dry indoor environments.

🌡 Temperature: Ideally 18–30°C. Protect from cold temperatures, sudden temperature changes and cool drafts.

🌱 Soil: Use a loose, chunky and well-draining mix containing coco coir, coco chip & perlite to provide good moisture balance and root aeration.

🌿 Fertiliser: Controlled-release fertiliser is already added to the potting mix. A balanced liquid fertiliser can be applied occasionally during active growth.

🚫 Toxicity: Alocasias contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals and are considered toxic if chewed or ingested by pets or children. Keep out of reach.

Also known as: Flying Squid Alocasia, Alocasia ‘Flying Squid’

A brilliantly strange collector plant for anyone who loves unusual foliage and plants that look like absolutely nothing else.

Pot Size: 75mm
Shipping Availability: Nationwide

We get a lot of questions about how our shipping works, so here’s a simple breakdown 🌿📦

Our shipping rates are charged per box, with each box able to fit up to 8 × 75mm potted plants.

As a general guide:
• 75mm pots make the best use of space, with up to 8 plants fitting in one box
• 100mm pots take up more space, so a box will usually fit around 3 plants depending on their size and shape

If your order requires more than one box, the website will automatically add the additional shipping charge.

For example:
• Up to 8 × 75mm plants = 1 box
• Larger 100mm plants use more box space and may reduce the total number of plants that fit in each box

Alocasia Plumbea - Flying Squid

Arrived looking just like the best picture in the listing but started dying the very next day :( Lasted about 2 weeks. Every tentacle shriveled and fell off.
I live in Central NSW so perhaps it hated the weather or I did something drastically wrong. Such a shame because it's such an unusual plant with fabulous form and colour. I'll stick to hardier plants in the future.

Hi Kiffin,
Thanks so much for taking the time to leave a review. We're really glad to hear your Alocasia Plumbea arrived looking just like the best photo in the listing — that confirms it left us in perfect condition, which is always our goal

We were a little disheartened to see a 1-star rating, especially given the plant was healthy on arrival. It sounds like the sudden decline may have been due to environmental stress after transit. We had a look at the weather in your area, and Central NSW has been experiencing quite cool conditions — unfortunately, that’s not ideal for tropical plants like this one, which really do need warmth and humidity to thrive.

To give sensitive plants like Alocasia the best chance in cooler climates, we recommend:
Bright filtered light, ideally with a grow light to boost conditions indoors
Warm, consistent temperatures, preferably above 18°C — a small heater near your plant area can make a big difference
Extra humidity, especially in winter when indoor air can be dry

It’s a truly unique plant, but definitely one for those willing to create the right conditions. Totally understand your decision to stick to hardier varieties going forward — and if you ever want help choosing something that’s a better match for your space, we’re always happy to help.

Thanks again for your order and feedback — we really appreciate your support!

Such a weird plant!

It came healthy and happy. (it's current condition is my fault entirely)

Then I dropped it.

Then I watered it too much.

Currently it's in rehab. If you buy this plant put it in well draining soil. If it's moist when you get it don't water it. I'm still trying to figure this one out. If It dies I'm getting another one.
