Philodendron Gloriosum × Melanochrysum ‘Glorious’ – Velvet Leaf Climbing Philodendron
Philodendron ‘Glorious’ is a velvet-leaved climbing aroid created by crossing Philodendron gloriosum with Philodendron melanochrysum. Its dark green, heart-shaped leaves have a soft velvety finish and bright white veins. They are narrower and darker than gloriosum but broader than melanochrysum. Australian hybridiser Keith Henderson first developed it in the 1970s, and it has become a favourite with collectors of indoor plants. Given a pole to climb, it grows bigger, bolder leaves over time.
Why You’ll Love It ✔️
✔️ Velvet foliage – Deep green, velvety leaves with crisp white veining catch the light beautifully, and the veins become more prominent as the leaves increase in size.
✔️ Rewarding climber – Unlike the crawling gloriosum, ‘Glorious’ actively climbs. On a moss pole it produces larger, more mature leaves, which makes it a satisfying collector plant to grow on.
✔️ Best of both parents – It pairs the broad, heart-shaped leaves of gloriosum with the darker, elongated character of melanochrysum, so it looks quite different from either parent. Its Australian breeding history adds to its appeal.
Care Tips
🌞 Light: Bright indirect light gives the best leaf size and colour. It tolerates medium light, but growth may be smaller and slower. Avoid direct sun, which can mark the velvet leaves.
💧 Water: Water when the top few centimetres of mix begin to dry. Keep it evenly moist but never waterlogged, as it is sensitive to both overwatering and drying out completely.
💦 Humidity: It prefers 60% humidity or higher. A humidifier helps new velvet leaves unfurl cleanly without tearing or crisping.
🌡 Temperature: 18–29°C is ideal. Keep it above 15°C and away from cold draughts and air-conditioning vents.
🌱 Soil: Use a well-draining, airy mix of coco coir, coco chip & perlite to keep the roots healthy and oxygenated.
🪴 Support: A moss pole or plank is strongly recommended. Climbing encourages larger, more mature leaves, and the plant tends to scramble rather than stand upright without one.
🌿 Fertiliser: Controlled-release fertiliser is already added to the potting mix. During spring and summer, add a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength every few weeks.
🚫 Toxicity: Toxic to pets and people if chewed or eaten. Like other philodendrons, it contains calcium oxalate crystals that can irritate the mouth and throat.
Also known as: Philodendron ‘Glorious’, Philodendron gloriosum × melanochrysum, Glorious Philodendron
A must-have velvet climber for collectors building a standout aroid collection.
We get a lot of questions about how our shipping works, so here’s a simple breakdown 🌿📦
Our shipping rates are charged per box, with each box able to fit up to 8 × 75mm potted plants.
As a general guide:
• 75mm pots make the best use of space, with up to 8 plants fitting in one box
• 100mm pots take up more space, so a box will usually fit around 3 plants depending on their size and shape
If your order requires more than one box, the website will automatically add the additional shipping charge.
For example:
• Up to 8 × 75mm plants = 1 box
• Larger 100mm plants use more box space and may reduce the total number of plants that fit in each box
