Philodendron Gloriosum × Pastazanum ‘Dean McDowell’ – Crawling Velvet Leaf Philodendron
Philodendron ‘Dean McDowell’ is a crawling aroid hybrid of Philodendron gloriosum and Philodendron pastazanum, created by John Banta in 1988. Its broad, heart-shaped leaves pair a soft velvety texture with bright pale veins. It grows from a creeping rhizome that travels across the top of the pot, sending up large leaves one after another. It’s a striking tropical foliage plant that collectors prize for its bold presence as an indoor plant.
Why You’ll Love It ✔️
✔️ Bold velvet leaves – Large, heart-shaped leaves with a velvety finish and contrasting pale veins give it a lush, dramatic tropical look.
✔️ No pole needed – As a crawling philodendron, it grows sideways across the pot rather than climbing. That makes it easy to display on a table, shelf or floor without any support.
✔️ Best of both parents – It combines the velvet texture of gloriosum with the bold leaf structure of pastazanum, and it can produce very large leaves in good conditions. That makes it a standout centrepiece in any aroid collection.
Care Tips
🌞 Light: Bright indirect light encourages larger leaves and steady growth. It tolerates medium light, but avoid direct sun, which can scorch the leaves.
💧 Water: Water when the top few centimetres of mix begin to dry. It is sensitive to overwatering, so never let it sit in soggy mix, as the rhizome can rot.
💦 Humidity: It prefers 60% humidity or higher. A humidifier helps new leaves unfurl cleanly and reach their full size.
🌡 Temperature: 18–29°C is ideal. Keep it above 15°C and away from cold draughts and air-conditioning vents.
🌱 Soil: Use a well-draining, airy mix of coco coir, coco chip & perlite. A wide, shallow pot gives the creeping rhizome room to travel. Keep the rhizome sitting on top of the mix rather than buried.
🌿 Fertiliser: Controlled-release fertiliser is already added to the potting mix. During spring and summer, add a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength every few weeks.
🚫 Toxicity: Toxic to pets and people if chewed or eaten. Like other philodendrons, it contains calcium oxalate crystals that can irritate the mouth and throat.

We get a lot of questions about how our shipping works, so here’s a simple breakdown 🌿📦
Our shipping rates are charged per box, with each box able to fit up to 8 × 75mm potted plants.
As a general guide:
• 75mm pots make the best use of space, with up to 8 plants fitting in one box
• 100mm pots take up more space, so a box will usually fit around 3 plants depending on their size and shape
If your order requires more than one box, the website will automatically add the additional shipping charge.
For example:
• Up to 8 × 75mm plants = 1 box
• Larger 100mm plants use more box space and may reduce the total number of plants that fit in each box
