Piper Crocatum – Silver-Veined Trailing Pepper Plant
Piper crocatum is a tropical climbing and trailing vine from the pepper family. Its dark olive-green leaves are heart-shaped and quilted, with silvery-pink markings that trace every vein, and their undersides are a rich burgundy. New leaves unfurl with a red flush, and the colouring stays vivid as the leaves age. Grown as an indoor plant, it suits a hanging pot or a moss pole, and it brings something quite different to a collection of aroids and tropical foliage plants.
Why You’ll Love It ✔️
✔️ Striking foliage – Silver-pink veining on dark green leaves with burgundy undersides gives it a jewel-like look that stands out in any collection.
✔️ Versatile growth habit – This flexible vine climbs with aerial roots or trails gracefully, so it works on a moss pole, a trellis or in a hanging basket.
✔️ A collector’s point of difference – It’s a member of the pepper family rather than an aroid, which makes it a distinctive addition to a tropical foliage collection. Small crystal-like beads often form under new leaves; they’re a natural feature of the plant, not a pest.
Care Tips
🌞 Light: Bright indirect light keeps the silver veining crisp and the growth compact. Avoid direct afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaves.
💧 Water: Water when the top couple of centimetres of mix begin to dry. It doesn’t like drying out completely and may drop leaves if left too dry, but avoid waterlogged mix.
💦 Humidity: It prefers high humidity, ideally 60% or more. A humidifier helps keep leaves full and healthy, especially in dry or air-conditioned rooms.
🌡 Temperature: 18–28°C is ideal. Keep it above 15°C and away from cold draughts, as cold can cause leaf curl and drop.
🌱 Soil: Use a well-draining mix of coco coir, coco chip & perlite that holds some moisture without staying soggy.
🪴 Support: Provide a moss pole or small trellis if you’d like it to climb, or let it trail from a shelf or hanging pot.
🌿 Fertiliser: Controlled-release fertiliser is already added to the potting mix. During spring and summer, add a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength every few weeks.
🚫 Toxicity: Toxicity information for this species is limited. We recommend keeping it out of reach of pets and children, as it may cause irritation if chewed.
Also known as: Red Piper, Red Betel, Sirih Merah
A beautiful choice for collectors after something a little different from the usual indoor jungle.
✨ About those sparkly crystals
If you flip a Piper Crocatum leaf over, you’ll probably spot tiny clear or white crystal-like beads on the underside, especially on newer leaves. Don’t panic, this is not spider mite or any other pest! It’s completely normal. The plant releases excess sugars and minerals through the back of its leaves, and over time these crystals can dry and darken into tiny black specks. They’re harmless, so there’s no need to treat or wipe them off. They’re simply part of what makes this plant unique.
Spider mites look quite different. Watch for fine webbing, tiny moving dots, and pale speckling or stippling on the top of the leaves. Crystals stay put, mites don’t. 🕷️❌
We get a lot of questions about how our shipping works, so here’s a simple breakdown 🌿📦
Our shipping rates are charged per box, with each box able to fit up to 8 × 75mm potted plants.
As a general guide:
• 75mm pots make the best use of space, with up to 8 plants fitting in one box
• 100mm pots take up more space, so a box will usually fit around 3 plants depending on their size and shape
If your order requires more than one box, the website will automatically add the additional shipping charge.
For example:
• Up to 8 × 75mm plants = 1 box
• Larger 100mm plants use more box space and may reduce the total number of plants that fit in each box
